Highlights in Hamburg
Highlights lighten individual sections, toning lays colour over the whole head of hair. We do both in the hair salon at The Aesthetic House in Hamburg-Hammerbrook, for women only. Colour, highlights and balayage are done by Charlina, master hairdresser, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Ümit takes over cutting, blow-drying and styling on the other days. Before anything is mixed we look at your hair and tell you honestly what is possible in one session and what needs two.

What sets highlights and toning apart
With highlights, the hair is lightened: individual sections are separated out, coated with bleach and usually wrapped in foil. The foil holds the heat, so the product lightens more evenly. Toning does not lighten, it lays colour onto and into the hair. A classic toning washes out again after about five to six washes, an intensive toning usually lasts six to eight weeks. We often combine the two: lighten first, then match the tone with a toning.
Foil, balayage or fine babylights
Foil highlights go right up to the roots. That gives control and strong lightening, but the roots are visible after six to eight weeks. Balayage is applied freehand with the brush, the root area stays darker and grows out softly. Four to six months without a colour refresh are realistic that way. Babylights are very fine highlights for a quiet transition. Which technique suits you depends on your starting colour and on how often you want to come back. Lightening and colour are Charlina's work here, so Wednesdays and Saturdays.
How your appointment runs
First we look at your hair structure, starting colour and previous treatments. Then the sections are separated, the product is applied and wrapped in foil. Applying takes around 30 minutes on short hair and 40 to 60 minutes on long hair, plus about 20 to 40 minutes of development time. After that it is rinsed out. Whether we also match the tone, work in a treatment or cut the lengths is your decision; these services are listed with their own price in the price list. Plan for two to three hours depending on length, a little more with very thick hair. Appointments are arranged in advance, easiest by WhatsApp.
Aftercare and how long it lasts
Try not to wash your hair in the first 48 hours after the appointment, so that colour and structure can settle. After that, two to three washes a week with a shampoo for coloured hair are usually enough, plus a mask once a week. A silver shampoo takes the yellow cast out of cool blonde, it is not needed daily. Heat above 180 degrees and chlorinated water put extra strain on lightened hair, and a heat protectant before the straightener helps.
What you should tell us beforehand
Let us know if you have coloured with henna at home, if your hair has just been permed or if your scalp is irritated or injured. If you have ever had a reaction after a hair colour, we do not colour, not even in a weaker form. The same applies after a reaction to a black henna tattoo. Please mention it beforehand and we will find an alternative without oxidative colour. According to the manufacturers' mandatory warning, oxidative hair colourants are not intended for persons under 16 years of age. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss it with your doctor beforehand. One widespread piece of advice, by the way, is not advice at all: the Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) expressly advises against the self-test on the skin. Its Stellungnahme Nr. 015/2014 states: “In agreement with expert opinions from Sweden and Denmark, the BfR therefore recommends that consumers do not carry out a self-test with PPD.” (Translation; the German original is authoritative.) Instead, simply tell us if you have ever reacted to a hair colour.

Frequently asked
What do highlights cost with you?
The price depends on hair length; the three levels are listed in our price list. Before anything is mixed we look at your hair and tell you what your appointment will come to. Anything that can be added, such as toning, a treatment or a cut, is listed there with its own price as well.
How often do I need a colour refresh?
You see it first at the parting and along the hairline around the face. With foil highlights a line shows there, with balayage and babylights the transition stays soft. A root colour or a toning in between freshens up colour and tone without lightening again. The usual intervals are given further up in the text.
Does it hurt?
Lightening is not meant to burn. The scalp can tingle slightly, especially with a root bleach. Tell us straight away if it becomes uncomfortable, then we rinse it out. If the scalp is irritated or injured, we would rather postpone the appointment.
When will I see the result?
Straight away. After rinsing and blow-drying you see the finished colour while you are still in the salon, so before and after fall within one appointment. Over the first few washes the tone settles a little further, which is why blonde often looks a shade warmer after around two weeks.
Can dark go straight to light?
That depends on how often your hair has already been coloured. Very dark or repeatedly coloured hair usually needs two to three sessions six to eight weeks apart. Forcing everything into one appointment comes at the cost of the hair structure, and we do not do that.
Where are you, and how do I get an appointment?
Spaldingstraße 68 in Hamburg-Hammerbrook, around 500 metres from the U1 stop Hauptbahnhof Süd and less than 50 metres from the Repsoldstraße bus stop. We are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Saturday from 11:00 to 18:00. Appointments are arranged in person, by WhatsApp, by phone or through the appointment request on our site. Colour appointments fall on Charlina's days, Wednesday and Saturday.
